Maze War: historically, one of the earliest if the the earliest first person shooter type game. Its development paved the way for the thousands of games that followed. Play was extremely simple – the player wanders about a maze shooting other players (seen as eyeballs!)gaining points and losing points if they are shot. MIDI Maze: developed for the Atari ST, this shooting game was an early game in the genre. As many as 16 computers were networked so that it could be played by as many as 16 players. In a slightly humorous twist, the players are shown as various smilies in different colours. A very popular game, it lasted until the end of the ST era about 1993. Wolfenstein 3D: escaping from a Nazi prison, the hero, “BJ” must fight his way through various rooms with armed guards and attack dogs. There are hidden rooms with food supplies, medical supplies as well as guns and ammunition. This first person shooter was released as shareware with only one episode. The full commercial release had and additional three episodes. In total the commercial release had 10 missions. Half-Life: set the groundwork for intense actions, setting the technology bar even higher. In fact, initially, this shooting game could not find a publisher because it was considered too ambitions. The player is required to do everything from puzzle solving to combat tasks to make his way out of an underground research center. Half life for the PlayStation was released in 2001. Half-Life 2: a sequel to the highly acclaimed first game in the series. Taking five years and $40 million, this shooting game was released in 2004. Originally it was only available for a Windows based pc but has been ported to PS3 and the Xbox consoles. In Half-Life 2, the events from the first game have to full effect on the human race. Humanity has been enslaved by the Combine, and alien civilization. The hero, Freeman, has to fight against increasing odds to survive. Halo: a trilogy of games reputed to be the best of the shooting games for gaming consoles. Published by Microsoft, the each successive game in the trilogy has broken previous sales records. The main premise is that humanity is fighting the Covenat, an extraterrestrial group of aliens bent on destroying the human race. |
