First Person Shooting Games

Shooting Games

When discussing a first person shooter, you are talking about a game which has a gun or other type of projectile type weapon. The game takes place through the eyes of the player – the first person. Very often, the game is multi-player and very hardware intensive.

One of the earlier, if not the earliest, first person shooter type of game, was a game called Maze War from the earlier 70s. The earliest multi-player first shooter was for the Atari ST in 1987. However, Wolfenstein 3D in 1992 is considered the ground breaker in which the genre really came togther. Another game that pushed the acceptance of the first person shooter was Doom released in 1993. Doom was arguably the most important and influential first person shooter.

Other important first shooters were Half Life (1998), Half Life 2 (2004) and Golden Eye 007 (1997). Golden Eye was one of the early shooting games available for the home gaming consoles.

Today, first person shooters continue to be a most viable commercial video game genre being marketed.
